Although when it comes to changing images in any way, most people will think of Photoshop by Adobe, some will think of Gimp. Gimp may not be as well-known as Adobe but it too has developed a program that can achieve professional standard image editing but the difference is that unlike Photoshop, it is free to download Gimp . There is absolutely no doubt that Photoshop is a good program which can assist you in editing or altering images, both still and video however, Photoshop will cost you to download whereas Gimp will not. Gimp specifically designed the program so it would be comparable to Photoshop and was successful in most aspects however, unlike Photoshop though Gimp has no dealings with Pantone colour. Pantone colour is something that can perfectly match the colours of images to the print which makes it both useful and important for website developers and designers however, is not much actual use to other people.
Photoshop is a large program and so will take up a lot of space on the hard drive of anyone that downloads it. This however is not such a big problem as it once was as hard drives today are much larger, capable of holding vast amounts of data but, to those people that have older hard drives, the size of the file may create a problem for them. Gimp’s program on the other hand, only requires 1/20th of the space on a hard drive and so is far more suitable for those people that may have older PCs or devices.
As both Photoshop and Gimp programs cover a lot of different aspects including turning colour images into black and white or black and white into colour, increasing or decreasing the size of the image and editing of both stills and videos, there is a lot to learn in order to make full use of either of these programs. For that reason, both Photoshop and Gimp offer a variety of tutorials, each one teaching about one specific aspect of the program. Some of these tutorials offer certificates for those that successfully complete them. If someone is considering a job that requires that they edit images, a certificate could assist them in getting that job however, although the Photoshop certificate is widely known and accepted as showing that the holder is capable of editing, the Gimp certificate is not so widely recognized and so may not be able to play any role in helping someone seek employment.
Many people that have at least tried both programs have displayed a preference for the Gimp as they believe that that is the one which is easiest to use with tools that are quickly understood compared to the Photoshop’s more complex ones. It must be said though that the Photoshop version that is designed for touch screens and needs just two fingers to perform many of the tasks, would be hard to beat in terms of ease to use and understand, even by Gimp.
